NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson has been one of the most respected names in jazz since the 1950s, when he worked with artists like Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. With a huge tone and soul-influenced style that combines straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul music, he calls his groove-laden style “soul sax.” While Sweet Poppa Lou will be enjoying tonight’s set from a front-row seat in the audience, his soulful vibe will surely infuse the playing of Akiko Tsuruga, music director Champian Fulton and surprise special guests as they salute him on his milestone 98th birthday.?
